Abstract and Keywords

In this chapter we define conflict, injustice, and what is meant by “managing” each of these perceptions. We illuminate the ease with which perceived conflict can become perceived injustice and vice-versa. We posit that perceived conflict becomes perceived injustice when goal blockage is seen as norm violating and that perceived injustice becomes perceived conflict when seemingly unfair goal blockages is not removed. Therefore, perceived conflict and perceived injustice can reciprocally influence each other. We conclude that better integration of the justice and conflict literatures is needed to strengthen understanding of how to manage injustice so that it does not escalate into conflict and how, if conflict occurs, to resolve conflict in ways that will be deemed mutually satisfying and fair, and propose ways to design future studies of organizational (in)justice with conflict management-insights in mind.

Keywords: goal blockage, norm violation, perceived conflict, perceived injustice, conflict-management strategies, injustice-management strategies, third-party strategies, integrative communications
