Abstract and Keywords

In this part the emphasis is on dance as an art form and its connections with therapeutic or transformative performance, either in traditional contexts such as stage or, often, in non-traditional contexts such as urban communities, derelict old buildings, or selected locations in the countryside. The chapters included here often aim to challenge stigma around ageing, physical and mental health, but also battle with the ultimate themes of life and death. Performances reflecting historical and cultural approaches to dance are visited. The boundaries around disciplines are questioned and conventions are revisited and redefined, while the personal, often sensitive and vulnerable, becomes the inspiration for performative work.
