Abstract and Keywords

Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms is an exploration of five different energetic states of being, which come together in the Wave (flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness). The Wave invites each individual to discover their own unique way of moving. In this chapter, the authors show how 5Rhythms supports being at home in the body—moving and becoming intimately aware of the body’s responses, capacities, pleasures, and freedom. What arises from release in the dance often results in wellbeing, although ’wellbeing’ is not defined as a final goal. Experiences from participants in the 5Rhythms community were collected through twenty-six open-ended questionnaires, and the data were approached through a hermeneutic phenomenology perspective. The authors write about the practice from their own experience as 5Rhythms teachers, describing the different rhythms as encountered in their own bodies.
