Abstract and Keywords

This section looks at transnational feminists’ involvement in the debates and movements on citizenship and state-building. The first chapter examines how feminists in Latin America have contributed, epistemologically and politically, to new conceptualizations of democracy, citizenship, and “the right to have rights” that take into account the factors of multiethnicity, multiculturalism, colonialism, decolonization, and “depatriarchalization”. The second chapter explores feminist movement building in South Asia and feminist interventions in wider South Asian democratization and peacebuilding processes. The third chapter analyzes women’s activism in China since the country’s economic reforms of the 1980s, from a political economy perspective. The fourth chapter critically interrogates how feminist ideas have influenced international development institutions and how the power to define women’s needs and interests has increasingly shifted to global policy arenas.

Keywords: China, citizenship, democracy, feminism, Latin America, peacebuilding, South Asia, Southasian feminism, state-building, transnational feminist movements, women’s activism
