Abstract and Keywords

The goal of this chapter is to provide an overview of service learning as pedagogy for higher education. We begin with an overview of the history and meaning of service learning. We then present examples of service-learning programs from a range of institutions—universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges. A significant portion of the chapter is dedicated to the practice and the logistics of service learning. Examples from the authors’ own experiences also demonstrate ways in which service-learning practices can enhance the learning process for college students. The latter part of the chapter provides ideas for the assessment of service learning, challenges in implementing service-learning courses, and an examination of future directions for advancing service learning in ways that will make it more effective in serving both the student and the community.
