Abstract and Keywords

In this chapter we seek to help teachers consider ethical behavior in a variety of teaching situations. Rather than emphasizing specific rules, we recommend that teachers consider ethical dimensions of all of their teaching, research, advising, and professional activities, and that they utilize general ethical principles to recognize and resolve dilemmas and make choices. We first review important reasons that teachers need guidance, then we examine potential sources of guidance, including the APA Ethics Code. Next we explore the applications of these guidelines to issues regarding competence, appropriate relationships, informed consent, confidentiality, and fairness. We close with a broad examination of ethical behavior with colleagues as well as students and the importance of ethical behavior beyond the classroom.
