Abstract and Keywords

Before one steps into the classroom, many decisions must be made that goes beyond the material to cover and the textbook to use. The scholarship on teaching and learning (SoTL) provides faculty members with evidence-based information as pedagogical choices are made and the many classroom management issues are decided. This chapter provides recommendations based on SoTL to help faculty determine everything from attendance policies, dealing with classroom incivilities, communicating expectations, improving student motivation, and addressing issues of academic dishonesty. Next, we review the questions one asks when it comes to deciding how to teach. What pedagogical approaches should be considered and how can faculty incorporate the SoTL literature when making these decisions.
