Abstract and Keywords

Multimethod and mixed methods research (MMMR) based on principles of equity, social justice, and decolonization has a role to play in enabling people to see, to understand, and to take action in support of those who are on the margins of society. As an endeavor undertaken collaboratively with those whose circumstances researchers seek to improve, MMMR can speak to hearts and to minds, instilling motivation and harnessing resources needed for social change. This chapter examines the role of MMMR in changing personal deficit understandings of social exclusion to multilayered explanations that examine historical, cultural, socioeconomic, and political influences operating within a society. Intervening then requires the moderation of structural impediments in order to respond effectively to people’s needs, priorities, and aspirations for inclusion. The scene is also set for mixed method, equity-focused evaluations of the success or otherwise of interventions to promote social justice and inclusion around the globe.

Keywords: equity, social justice, decolonization, social inclusion, multilayered explanations
