Abstract and Keywords

This chapter critically addresses the preoccupation with the integration of data and findings in much mixed methods research (MMR). It argues that traditional modernist strivings must be considered in the specific context of knowledge production in the 21st century and that a preoccupation with integration in MMR may undermine social justice–related aspirations by erasing marginalized perspectives. This is identified as a particular feature of MMR research undertaken in the areas of medicine and the health sciences. The value of research conducted in the transformative-emancipatory paradigm is considered alongside the contribution of postmodern literature. The chapter concludes with a summary of how social justice–related MMR can contribute to new ideas.

Keywords: social justice, marginalized perspectives, transformative-emancipatory paradigm, mixed methods research, postmodern literature
