Abstract and Keywords

This chapter provides an introduction to spatial analysis in mixed methods research (MMR), which is part of the “spatial turn” in social research. As more and more data are being “geo-referenced,” opportunities arise for the inclusion of such data in MMR. For example, survey respondents’ postcodes (zipcodes), or geo-referenced police crime data, can be mapped and related to other data in a multimethod project. Even qualitative data can be “mapped”—the global positioning system tracks of mobile, go-along interviews and their accompanying transcripts may be geo-coded or geo-linked and analyzed in relation to the spatial location of the talk. Freely available maps and geo-referenced data together with developments in computer software (ARCGIS, CAQDAS) have greatly increased the opportunity to represent and analyze spatial data. This chapter describes the use of emergent technologies for spatial data collection and analysis, providing extended examples of spatially oriented strategies in MMR.
