Abstract and Keywords
This chapter addresses mixed and multimethods research from the perspective of a quantitative researcher. The chapter illustrates how qualitative data have long informed and contributed to predominantly quantitative studies; emphasizes the importance of the research question driving study design, rather than an allegiance to quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods; describes several models of alternative purposes for mixing methods; briefly reviews caveats about the possible downsides of using such models, including the potential for a study to be lauded because of its design despite its flaws in addressing the research question; and illustrates a wide variety of ways in which mixed and multimethods can contribute to experimental and quasi-experimental research, which includes (especially for quasi-experiments) assessing the plausibility of and attempting to rule out classic validity threats.
