Abstract and Keywords
Symbolic considerations were involved in many aspects of the royal tombs of the New Kingdom. Of primary importance, the symbolism of location, orientation, decoration, text, and designation (nomenclature of the parts of the tomb) are individually surveyed in this chapter. Most of the symbolism found in the KV had as its underlying field of reference one of two great themes: the underworld journey of the sun god, Re, and his interaction with the deities of the netherworld, especially Osiris.
