Abstract and Keywords

The variety of sculptural dedications in sanctuaries across the Roman world defies easy classification and cannot be fitted into the overly broad category of “votive,” but it was instead enmeshed with a range of ritual practices. As with all aspects of religion in the ancient world, sanctuary sculpture was always tied to individual temples and specific rites practiced by a cult community and overseen by temple staff.
