Abstract and Keywords

This chapter examines the paradigms of landscape and climatescape in the dance-theater of Meredith Monk, the Wooster Group, and The TEAM (Theatre of the Emerging American Moment). Whereas landscape implies a bridging between figures and grounds, seers and seen, climatescape takes for granted that all bodies and spaces are already part of a larger, interconnected, planetary whole, one bent toward self-extinction. Conceptualized as such, landscape forges connections between dance and theater, whereas climatescape already accepts as a given the spatial/bodily basis of our communal existence and its deepening precariousness on earth. Landscape frames space; climatescape frames time. Thus, while landscape in Monk’s work serves to activate the past, and in The Wooster Group’s performance to conjure the present, climatescape in the dance-theater of The TEAM forecasts a catastrophic future. Whether mediated through landscape or climatescape, the borders between figure and ground become fractured, mosaic, and permeable; dance becomes theater, theater dance.
