Abstract and Keywords

The introductory chapter, which serves as a gateway to the Handbook, focuses on defining the contemporary characteristics of Asia; assessing whether they are unique to this region; elaborating the most prominent theoretical constructs used by scholars for explaining their centrality; and contemplating Asia’s future in light of these identified characteristics. The chapter concludes by outlining what we think are the major lacunae in the study of the international relations of Asia, and the most promising avenues for future research.
