Abstract and Keywords

This chapter focuses on organizational culture and organizational climate scholarship (a) written by communication scholars, (b) based on a communicative perspective, (c) that deals directly with communication phenomena, and (d) that uses methodologies generally accepted by communication scholars, or (e) published in communication and closely related journals. The first section positions the study of communication in organizational settings. The second and third sections address the body of organizational culture literature and substantially smaller body of organizational climate scholarship, respectively. The fourth section compares the two constructs. The chapter reviews perspectives or lenses organizational communication scholars use for studying organizational culture, and keys in on communication scholars’ preference for the interpretive perspective, which examines organizing as emerging from patterns of meaning-making, and culturing from patterns of expectations implicated by that meaning-making. Examples of communication scholarship demonstrate the way in which communicative investigations of organizational culture rely solely or largely on the interaction, talk, or conversation of organizational members in situ.

Keywords: communication phenomenon, communicative perspective, interpretive perspective, meaning-making, organizational climate, organizational communication, organizational culture
