Abstract and Keywords

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, 5.9 million students ages 6 to 21 are served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Qualitative investigations of phenomena surrounding students with exceptionalities in music education have provided insight into the plight of students with learning challenges. Specifically, qualitative inquiry provides the unique viewpoint of all stakeholders, including music educators, students, and families. This chapter will examine qualitative research and students with disabilities as well as investigations into the inclusion of students with specific diagnoses into music classrooms. In addition, this chapter will review research in music teacher preparation and conclude with recommendations for future qualitative research.
