Abstract and Keywords

Phenomenology is at the heart of all qualitative exploration. This chapter considers the foundations of phenomenology, phenomenological inquiry in general, as well as music education. In addition, the potential uses of phenomenology in music education research are explored in order to identify models of phenomenological inquiry for future use in music education. A methodological and philosophical clarification is considered to show how the phenomenological lens can be used to interpret the lived experience of all participants, including the researcher, as well as suggestions for future uses of phenomenology in music education.

Keywords: phenomenology, qualitative, music education, lived experience, methodology
