(p. xvi) (p. xvii) Note on Sources and Musical Examples

(p. xvi) (p. xvii) Note on Sources and Musical Examples

This book contains numerous references to German, French, and Italian sources related to eighteenth-century music theory, aesthetics, and criticism. Many of these sources have not been translated into English and are quoted here in the authors’ translations. Except for passages quoted from existing English translations, the original text is provided alongside the translation. For block quotations, it occurs after the translation. For quotations within the main text, the original is given in an endnote or, for brief quotations, it is enclosed in round brackets after the translation.

Unless otherwise specified, the texts of musical examples from Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven are based on Joseph Haydn Werke (Henle), Neue Mozart Ausgabe (Bärenreiter), and Beethoven Werke (Henle). When other editions are used for reasons related to the authors’ arguments, they are identified in the course of the accompanying discussions.
