Abstract and Keywords

Personality theories hold a central position in the study of individual differences, from models outlining the underlying factors of personality to understanding "how we are both like others and yet unique." Notably, the effort invested by psychologists in the research of personality rivals that directed at intelligence. However, much of the focus has been on adult personality with the assumption that personality formation in childhood is more variable and thus less psychologically-relevant than other developmental domains. Conversely, research has demonstrated that personality, although somewhat dynamic in childhood and adolescence, is clearly present and measureable at these earlier ages, particularly traits such as extraversion and neuroticism. Furthermore, temperament has received considerable recent study and it is shown to be reliably defined even in very young infants. This chapter reviews the personality trait and temperament literature with particular attention to personality assessment.
