Abstract and Keywords

Neuropsychological assessment is often recommended for a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders. Neurological involvement may be presumed (e.g., learning disability) or identifiable (e.g., seizure disorder). In either case, possible consequences can include impaired cognitive, sensory, motor, educational, behavioral, and psychological functioning. Neuropsychological assessment provides additional information across a range of domains to aid in case conceptualization and formulation of treatment planning. There are multiple approaches that may be applied in neuropsychological assessment, as well as various measures that may be used. This chapter identifies key principles to guide neuropsychological assessment of children and adolescents consistent with ethical and professional standards. Included is a discussion of how neuropsychological assessment complements the response to intervention (RTI) movement. Some of the continuing issues with regard to measurement and additional research needed are also highlighted.
