Abstract and Keywords
A substantial body of research and evaluation is conducted through agencies whose primary mission is not research, but service delivery. This chapter will highlight some of the applied research, initiated by federal program offices, that shows promise for moving forward the knowledge base about disadvantaged children and families. Examples include large-scale longitudinal studies that have provided foundational information about the characteristics and life histories of individuals who live in poverty as well as large-scale evaluations and smaller research and evaluation programs that target issues of particular relevance to low-income families. The chapter also includes discussion of issues that arise in promoting the use of research evidence in federal programs and policy.
