Abstract and Keywords
Child abuse and neglect are serious problems confronting professionals in public health, justice, social services, and education in the United States and elsewhere. Of all forms of child maltreatment, neglect is the most common form, and the overlap of poverty with child neglect has been most pronounced. This has led some to speculate that the consequences of childhood neglect are primarily driven by the poverty associated with childhood neglect, rather than the neglect itself. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the overlap between childhood neglect and poverty; to call attention to the similarity in outcomes associated with each; to describe recent research that examines the contributions of childhood neglect and childhood poverty to mental health, academic, and behavioral outcomes; and to discuss several challenges that confront the field of child neglect research and questions that warrant future research.
