Abstract and Keywords

Revitalized in the wake of the civil rights and women’s movements, currently experiencing the challenges of multiculturalism, and responding in complex ways to globalization, to immigration on a scale not seen in the South for well over a century, and to the emergence of postnational cultural paradigms (among them hemispheric, New World, and transatlantic studies) associated with globalization, this chapter provides an overview of how the study of southern literature and culture has become one of the most exciting projects in American literary studies.
