Abstract and Keywords

This chapter reviews the literature on Russia’s unofficial economy and discusses conceptual and measurement issues. It argues that activities in the unofficial economy are diverse in terms of forms and participants, calling for more careful analysis of different types of such activities. In addition to presenting data on the size and trends of the Russian unofficial economy, it examines the causes and effects of the unofficial economy on Russia’s economy as a whole and its dynamic process.
