Abstract and Keywords

The question of how people view automation and how this attitude affects people’s use of automation has become one of the major issues in cognitive engineering. Much of the discussion on people’s attitudes toward automation focuses on the concept of trust in automation. We describe the conceptual foundation of trust and analyze it as a cognitive state and as a description of behavior, introducing the concepts of reliance and compliance. We briefly discuss similarities and difference between trust in people and trust in automation. We then present a normative model of trust that can serve as a benchmark for evaluating people’s actions and their trust in automation. We conclude the chapter with a discussion of some open issues and future directions for research on trust.
