Abstract and Keywords

Today’s complex systems require flexible and robust design methods. Ecological interface design is one such method that seeks to supplement user-centered design methods by incorporating knowledge of the user’s cognitive work and the physical constraints of his or her work domain into the design. This method progresses from a five-level hierarchical analysis of the work domain called a work domain analysis and from this model generates design insights. The work domain model is used to generate the information requirements, contextual requirements, and design seeds for the eventual design. In this chapter the fundamentals of the ecological design process are discussed. An example is given showing the redesign of a portion of a process control system.
