Abstract and Keywords

Judgment is a commonly used term to describe the challenges faced by human operators when interacting with controlled systems or work environments through technological interfaces. In this chapter we provide a technique for conceiving and modeling judgment, including how the quality of human performance may be moderated by environmental uncertainty and sensing and display technology. Specifically, judgment is conceived as the degree of correspondence between a set of human judgments and the distribution of true system or environmental states or events being judged. Judgment analysis is a collection of interrelated statistical modeling and estimation techniques that can be used to decompose judgment performance into seven individually measurable components for engineering analysis and design. We discuss how the model and measures complement research in related areas, such as situation awareness, human-automation interaction, and naturalistic decision making.
