Abstract and Keywords

Cognitive task analysis offers a systematic approach for understanding the cognitive processes, cognitive challenges, and cognitive requirements that underlie proficient performance in complex socio-technical domains. By describing cognitive elements of work, we can provide a deep understanding of how operators think, what task elements they find challenging, and what support may benefit them. Cognitive task analysis findings support development of effective solutions to a wide range of technology, training, workplace design, and organizational challenges. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the elements of CTA, we describe some representative CTA methods, we illustrate some areas of application, and we identify some future challenges.

Keywords: cognitive task analysis, macrocognition, expertise, decision making, methodology
