Abstract and Keywords

African American theology is a discipline of critical intellection, largely appreciated as black and womanist theology. Seminal discussions in African American theology have addressed the dehumanization and oppression of African Americans as well as the prophetic dimensions of African American Christian thought and practice in the United States. Over the past four decades of its existence, African American theology has not developed any substantial discourse on the subject of religious pluralism, focusing instead on Christianity as the distinct source of religiously inspired social activism in African American history. This essay examines African American religious diversity or religious pluralism, with particular reference to the scholarship of theologians such as Josiah Young, Anthony Pinn, Will Coleman, Dianne Stewart Diakité, and Monica Coleman. It also looks at the contributions of pioneering scholars such as J. Deotis Roberts and Gayraud Wilmore, religious pluralism in African Caribbean theologies, and black humanist religion and theology. It concludes with a discussion of religious pluralism in relation to the future of African American theology.
