Abstract and Keywords

This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this volume, which is about the economies and economics of the Pacific Rim. This volume investigates how various demographic, political and natural factors interplay with economics in determining the development paths of a diverse set of economies in a large and diverse region. It explores patterns of economic development including trade, investment, finance and migration; geopolitical forces and attempts at regional integration; and government policies toward industrialization and innovation, as well as their fiscal capacity to support these policies in an era of global challenges such as climate change, slowing growth and aging populations.
