Abstract and Keywords

In this chapter I examine retirement through the lens of creativity and explore how retirement can exert a positive impact on retirees through the provision of novelty. With a focus on retirement planning, decision making, and adjustment, I propose that creativity influences retirement through three interrelated perceptions and actions: (a) openness to role transitions, (b) divergent thinking, and (c) goal persistence. Through an interactionist approach, I then examine personality variables and social contexts likely to lead retirees to approach retirement creatively. In the discussion I offer key questions to guide future theoretical and empirical research.
