Abstract and Keywords

Few review papers or chapters on the epidemiology of eating disorders focus on epidemiology solely as it pertains to children and adolescents. The aim of this chapter is to critically review the current state of the epidemiologic literature specific to children and adolescents in terms of research methodology. The current literature provides some information on the rates of occurrence in this younger population. However, the literature is its infancy. Knowledge development will require greater investment, as well as improved rigor in clinical evaluation and measurement. This will serve to improve the understanding of onset, progression, management, and outcomes, and the evolution of these important disorders.

Keywords: Epidemiology, incidence, prevalence, mortality, outcome, recovery, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, eating disorder not otherwise specified, children, adolescents
