(p. xi) Acknowledgments

My research assistant, Jamie Hellewell, has been a remarkably reliable and congenial person to work with. Throughout the process of preparing this work for publication I have relied on his careful and diligent editing of the contributions that we have received. My good friend and esteemed colleague Peter Millican, with whom I have discussed all aspects of Hume’s philosophy over many years, also provided helpful advice and comment concerning this project, particularly in its early stages. I would also like to thank Peter Ohlin at OUP for his early enthusiasm and support for this project. I consider myself unusually fortunate to have a publisher of his quality and sound judgment. I am similarly grateful to his colleagues at OUP who have worked in such a professional and efficient way to bring this volume into print.

Finally, this collection is dedicated to the memory of Annette Baier, a distinguished and much admired colleague, as well as a friend and mentor to many in the community of Hume scholarship. Her death, shortly after completing and submitting her contribution to this volume, is a great loss for us all.

Paul Russell,
