Abstract and Keywords

This article examines the musical socialization and enjoyment of children in Gambia. It presents vignettes and observations drawn from fieldwork in a densely populated, multi-ethnic, suburban area near the capital city, Banjul. Music helped children to better understand and affirm their place in their family, community, and school. It enabled them to acquire the knowledge necessary to participate in their culture, from religious traditions to courting rituals. It also allows then join in an enjoyable and prevalent part of cultural expression—music making.
