Abstract and Keywords

Across all races and ethnicities, alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use increases during the middle school and high school years. The current chapter discusses ATOD use and adolescent development, cultural considerations for ATOD use, and factors that may affect ATOD use during this developmental period. It also reviews the prevention and intervention work with this population across a variety of settings, including schools, primary care settings, homeless shelters, and juvenile justice. Overall, the research in this area emphasizes the importance of identifying adolescence as a distinct neurodevelopmental period, with its own set of specific prevention and intervention needs.
