Abstract and Keywords

Naming is deceptively complex task that involves the interaction of multiple cognitive functions. This article provides an overview of the relationship between these functions and regions of the brain. It begins with an overview of the methods used to study the relationship between brain regions and naming. In particular, it focuses on lesions caused by stroke or degenerative disease, functional imaging, and transcranial magnetic stimulation. Next it discusses a generally accepted cognitive model of naming, which includes conceptual and word-form processing. Finally, it discusses the relationship that various brain regions have in relation to cognitive functions in the model. The literature indicates that naming, like much of language processing, is left lateralized, relying on an extended network of regions. Importantly it seems most of these regions participate in multiple cognitive functions in naming to varying degrees.
