Abstract and Keywords

This chapter reviews the evidence of the Islamic conquest of Iran, considering its effect on local economies. Excavated sites such as Rayy, Istakhr, Bishapur, Siraf, Susa, and Tureng Tepe are examined with a view to exploring whether the Islamic conquest left visible markers. Late Sasanian and early Islamic settlement attested in survey is compared and questions of demography and economic investment in irrigation infrastructure before and after the conquest are discussed.
