Abstract and Keywords

This chapter reviews the evidence from the site of Kuh-e Khwaja in Sistan, where excavations by Ernst Herzfeld and later researchers revealed an important building complex that included wall paintings, stucco reliefs, and a fire temple in the shape of a chahartaq. The function and significance of Kuh-e Khwaja and the relationship of the site to Zoroastrian religious practice are discussed. In addition, the chapter surveys the pre-Islamic religious architecture of Iran more generally, particularly the evidence of fire temples of Sasanian date found across the country.
