Abstract and Keywords
This chapter surveys the literary and numismatic evidence of the fratarakā dynasty in Fars (ancient Persis). Chronological problems surrounding the appearance of the new dynasty and the decline of Seleucid control in the region are discussed. The conflicting testimony of the Greek sources and the divergent dating of the fratarakā coin issues are explored. The iconography and royal paraphernalia of the dynasts, and their relationship to the Achaemenids, are also treated.
