Abstract and Keywords

The Introduction starts by explaining the history of Iran as a nation-state. Today, the introduction states, Iran is viewed as the paragon of defiance agains the West and imperialism as the defender of the Muslim world and the Palestinians in the face of threats and sanctions. However, the civilization has a much more complicated history than what is often acknowledged. The background to the use of the term Iran to describe the region is outlined. The aim of this book is to show that Iran and the Iranians have had a complex history, formed gradually throughout different periods.
