Abstract and Keywords
This article discusses the challenges involved in operating safe institutions. It observes the public support in the mission, regulation, and funding of the prisons in America, and then shows how crowding has worsened these prison challenges. This article also considers the decline in prison disturbances, and attributes this to the presence of a more professionalized workforce, judicial intervention, and accredited facilities.
