Abstract and Keywords

This chapter summarizes and critically evaluates recent social cognitive work on the construct of human goals. The authors begin by defining goals from a social cognitive perspective, and then introduce what they believe is one of the most important outstanding questions in contemporary research on goal pursuit: What is the role of consciousness? The authors identify the conceptual landscape of this question and summarize what current evidence indicates as well as outstanding theoretical issues and unexplored questions. A number of interesting avenues for future research are identified.
