Abstract and Keywords

The British civil wars and the Continental European conflicts of the first half of the seventeenth century are widely accepted as important historical markers. This chapter begins by examining the historical links in the form of Britain’s involvement in Continental struggles, primarily the Thirty Years War. It then devotes most of its space to the historiographical connections, concluding that the differences were a matter of degree rather than stark divergence. Above all, research has posed remarkably similar questions and suggested approaches which can be fruitfully applied to both Britain and Continental Europe.
