(p. v) Acknowledgements

This volume had its origin in the 2011 Festival of Ideas at the University of York, organized by the late Jane Moody, who helped greatly in its development. We would like to acknowledge and thank the generous support of the British Academy in funding the resulting conference on ‘The Bible in the Seventeenth Century: An International Conference’, alongside the support of the Society for Renaissance Studies and the Institute of Historical Research. The Department of English and Related Literature at York and the Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies both contributed generously, as did the many postgraduates who helped out. We are grateful not only to our speakers at that event, many of whom subsequently became contributors, but to all of the participants whose comments and questions helped to shape this volume. The conference ran alongside an exhibition at York Minster, and we would like to extend our thanks in particular to Sarah Griffin and Victoria Harrison and the staff of the Minster.

Emma Baldwin provided excellent editorial assistance, and thanks also to Marta Napodano. Help with the chronology was provided by Andrew Willie Sr. Thanks to Tania Demetriou for checking the Greek, and Michele Campopiano and Anna Bernard for their help with Hebrew. Jacqueline Baker has been wonderful to work with from the earliest stages of the book and we thank her and the editorial staff at Oxford University Press. Warm thanks to Hannah DeGroff for her scrupulous patience and imagination in compiling the index. Thanks to Angus McBean and Molly Killeen for advice and ideas, and to Sherlock Bones for her patience in the volume’s final stages. Finally, and especially, the editors wish to thank the contributors to the volume, who have been excellent to work with, and endlessly patient with our queries, and whose work—both within and beyond these pages—is an ongoing source of inspiration and excitement.
