Abstract and Keywords
This chapter provides a general introduction to, and overview of, the Oxford Handbook of U.N. Peacekeeping Operations. It first provides major historical and conceptual contexts as well as key milestones in the evolution of UN peacekeeping between 1948 and 2013. It then considers some of the overarching achievements and challenges encountered throughout the 65-year history of UN peacekeeping. The handbook itself offers a comprehensive chapter-by-chapter analysis of all 67 UN peacekeeping operations by leading scholars, experts and practitioners. The thematic part of the handbook includes an analysis of UN peacekeeping in the context of wider peace operation trends, the relationship between peacekeeping, humanitarian interventions and the responsibility to protect as well as legal aspects, the UN’s inter-organizational partnerships and a conceptual chapter on various methods for evaluating the success and failure of UN Peacekeeping.
