Abstract and Keywords

This chapter focuses on the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), a peacekeeping mission created by the UN Security Council in July 2013 to help stabilize key population centers and support the re-establishment of state authority throughout Mali, and to develop and implement programs for the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of former combatants such as militias and self-defense groups. After providing an overview of the conflict in Mali, the chapter outlines MINUSMA’s mandate and evaluates its operational achievements and limitations, particularly in terms of promoting and protecting human rights, as well as supporting humanitarian assistance.
