Abstract and Keywords

This chapter focuses on the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG), a peacekeeping mission deployed by the UN Security Council from August 1993 to June 2009 to verify compliance with the ceasefire agreement between Georgia and Abkhazia. After providing an overview of the conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia, the chapter outlines UNOMIG’s mandate, operational activities as well as the operation’s successes and limitations. The chapter also examines the role of Russia in the political processes and peacekeeping operation.
