Abstract and Keywords

Neurolinguistics emerged from nineteenth century aphasiology enriched by experiments using new methods such as evoked response potentials and functional magnetic resonance imaging, and also by the comparative neurobiology of creatures without language. Construction grammar, cooperative computation and an account of the evolution of the language-ready brain provide a theoretical framework for analysis of auditory sentence processing, the apparent dissociation between syntax and semantics in agrammatic aphasia, the neural representation of verbs and nouns versus actions and objects, and the possible relation of the brain’s representation of action to typology.
