Abstract and Keywords

Positive psychology interventions for older adults aim to promote positive ageing. The focus is on the science of flourishing and optimal functioning of older adults, proposing new ways to address some of the most pressing issues facing modern societies. The increases in longevity and developments in medicine and healthcare challenge mental health professionals in helping the growing older population to live not only longer and more healthily, but better and happier. How to age successfully and enhance flourishing is therefore the focus of much concern and challenge to positive psychology studies. The major concepts of positive ageing presented in this chapter include psychological well-being and flourishing, successful ageing and positive health. Implications for how to enhance positive emotions and functioning and to keep older adults socially and physically active and engaged using inner personal and external resources are discussed. Positive psychology strategies for positive ageing are recommended.
